Mark Hershiser and I have always gotten along real well and I found out why yesterday. Mark and I share a common bond. We’ve both broken our necks. His sounds a little more serious than mine but I’m sure we both came out changed men. I was in Kona Hawaii surfing (or trying to) and I got caught on top of a wave. To make it worse it broke close to shore. While it seemed 20 feet tall it was every bit of 10 and I went over the top. Everything happened so fast I couldn’t get my hands out and was piledriven right into the bottom. The moment I hit my whole body went numb. Others that I have talked to that are paralyzed have said similar things. They knew the very second they hit that something very bad had happened. I was conscious but bleeding pretty bad from my head. I couldn’t move my body or breathe very well. I was pretty sure I was going to drown. The great thing about Hawaii is the lifeguards are the best in the world. They immediately saw what happened, put me on a flat board and had me shipped off to the hospital. All the while I’m crying, apologizing to my wife because I know she is going to have to take care of a paralyzed husband the rest of her life. The ride to the hospital is not a short one in Kona. It’s a great hospital for neck injuries as they have thousands a year, but it’s a bumpy ride. On the way there I felt a stinging and then a tingling in my legs and within an hour I had feeling but weak legs. My arms were still nothing. They took an X-ray and said I had broken my c-6 and needed to be flown to Honolulu for emergency surgery. The medivac flight wouldn’t be there for a few hours so they decided to do a CT scan while we waited. Turned out there was sand in the X-ray and they only found a slight crack and some bulging discs. I was free to fly home and go to my own hospital. I couldn’t get a flight out for a few days so I laid in bed waiting to find out my fate. On the day before my flight my right arm began to have sensations and completely came back over then next few days. I was left with a left arm that now had feeling but zero strength. I couldn’t make a fist or pick up anything. I’ll shorten the story and tell you that it took a year of rehab and massages but eventually my left arm came back and everything has feeling but my thumb. I can no longer turn my neck to the left. It was after all this that I vowed to never take my body for granted. I’m not sure if I was given a gift but I had one taken away and knew that I would forever take complete care of that gift. I also said I would go back to Kona and thank those lifeguards (I did two years later) I also wanted to return to Kona and do the Ironman. I wrote out a bucket list of things I wanted to accomplish now that I had my body back. The big three were, lose 50 pounds, run a marathon, do Ironman, especially the big Ironman on Kona. I lost the 50 pounds in three months because I started running, I did a marathon that year 9 years ago and have done 23 since. I have done two Ironman. I don’t know if I’ll ever qualify for Kona but I will keep trying until I do. We as humans need things to wake us up to what life is about. Some times it is a horrible event, some times it is a close call. I received mine and it is now who I am. It saved me from a life of being stagnant and moved me to a life of movement and growing.
