Recently I had a domain that was total crap go through the expiring auctions process at Godaddy. The actual name meant nothing, but it did have traffic, BS spam traffic. Over the past year the name averaged 100 uniques per month and made a total of 14 cents in parking revenue. Surprisingly (ok not surprising at all) the name sold for over $100 in the Godaddy expiring auction.
So if you want to throw money away, buy Godaddy expiring names based on traffic alone. You at least need to check the backlink profile of the name to see if it looks like it has been link farmed or if some other black hat type thing went on. You can use Moz’s opensite explorer or Ahrefs.com to help with checking the backlinks, I’m sure there’s a bunch of other resources that will work too.
Not only is the domain not going to make you any money via parking revenue, you’ll have a harder time selling it than godaddy did. Godaddy changes the name to their own nameservers once it expires. This gives them a shortterm window to look at the traffic stats of the name, stats that then get added to the auction listing. If you list the name for sale you won’t have the luxury of using these BS traffic stats to push the name off on someone else.
Just to be clear I’m not saying that Godaddy is doing anything wrong adding these numbers, just make sure you know what you’re getting if you bid on them.
