The county that I work for recently obtained a federal SAFER for some $8M to hire firefighers.
In the past, and probably other areas of the country, this was a long process with sometimes thousands of applicants. I remember testing for Maryland counties where you had to score almost perfect on the written test to advance any further in the process. I took the test in a PA city that you actually had to pay to take, and there were 300 people taking the test for 3 open positions.
Now days they’ve lowered the standards just to get enough applicants to hire. Apparently with this hiring process, there won’t even be a test. The applicants will have to pass a physical test but nothing that assesses cognitive ability.
If there are more applicants than positions the only ranking metrics will be subjective as the written test served this purpose as well.
The worst part is(to me anyway) those of us that already work there will actually have to supervise these people. The last thing I want to do everyday at work is babysit a 19 year old that’s never had a real job in his life and probably licks windows.
