I have a worm farm in my kitchen. I suck at being a worm farmer.
Yesterday I noticed that the composting material that I added a few days ago hasn’t been eaten. I looked through the dirt and old casings and can’t find any worms.
I know a few escaped, because I found their dead, dried up carcasses around the house. I imagine they made a break for it, heading to freedom and didn’t make it. The rest must have turned into the compost that they were previously creating.
I did some research and I think I may have poisoned the soil with too much organic material. I plan on getting a hold of Shane to see if he has any input, he seems like he’d be a worm guy.
This isn’t my first attempt at gentleman worm farming. The first go round I had red wigglers, they all died. After about a year I tried againt and got another order of red wigglers.
I had my neighbor bring them inside after they were delivered, since I was at work. She put them in the fridge and they all died. I then decided to try Euro and African night crawlers. Both of these worm species are bigger than the red wigglers, so they’re a little better for fishing, but like their smaller red cousins I’ve managed to kill all the little bastards by accident.
I’ll try again, but if anyone reading this has any worm husbandry skills, contact me with advice.

Ha. You would be 100% correct. I am a pretty good worm farmer. I raised red wigglers and had 5 bins going at one point. There is definitely tricks to keeping the moisture levels correct and the amount of food you give them. And yes I own wormfarmer.com and Vermicomposting.com which is the scientific name of worm farming.
“because I found their dead, dried up carcasses around the house”
on self reflection i’ve got some domains in the same state… dead dried up carcasses…
PH
I have been fishing with worms for a number of years and in this connection I have had a worm farm – I used tiger worms and got them delivered in a container with muddy soil and I kept them alive by pouring coffee grounds down to them every time I made a filter coffee (with the filter)- It was the only thing they got and they love it and it effectively keeps them alive for months.
