I just watched the session from NamesCon Europe on DomainSherpa.com, “Navigating Appraised Value vs Market Value of Your Domain”. There was a lot of good information along with topics that would perpetuate discussion anywhere domainers are gathered.
Many of the issues are dynamic, there’s not really a black and white answer. It’s discussion for any domainer above the beginner level. As with any topic, that is dynamic, the person trying to learn needs to actively observe the discussion to best glean the information. The concepts, by their nature, don’t easily fit into written text. They then need to take that information, process it, and mix in their own experience and knowledge to figure out how to best apply it to their own situation.
This kind of discussion and information sharing delivery model, it perfect for the continuing education of people in the industry, who have a good grasp of the basics.
The second half of the discussion focused on “New Investors”. It seems like we spend an inordinate amount of time trying to explain things to new investors at every turn. We, being any domain industry media.
I don’t think this approach is working well. Maybe the issue is that when we have such a low barrier to entry, anyone, any hobbyist with a fleeting interest in domains becomes a “new domain investor”. They don’t use the resources already available or apply themselves to learn leaving us constantly talking about helping new investors. Then we get frustrated with the same questions over and over like ” Where do I sell my domains” or “Why does this one suck”.
At this point if you have to ask where to sell these damn things you are a beginner and should refrain from asking anymore questions. You should study the plethora of information already out there, or Enroll in DnAcademy.com.
The point here isn’t discourage anyone from learning or asking questions, but rather point a new or aspiring domainer in the right direction from the start, while at the same time allowing anyone beyond beginner the ability to more easily learn and grow as a domainer.
