Heading to Leadville this weekend to go watch and cheer on the Leadville 100 participants. It’s always been my goal to run Leadville and every year that passes makes that goal a little more difficult. There are a handful of people who finish it at my age and last year’s age group winner did it in just under 25 hrs which gets you the coveted belt buckle. If I hadn’t joined D3 I certainly could have done this. Now that I work a lot of hours it will take a lot of discipline and time organization.
Leadville 100 starts at 11,000 feet and has another 17,000 feet of gain and then the descent. Yes, 17,000. So you can hardly breathe and then you climb for 6 hrs with no sleep over the day. It’s brutal. I’m going to get a sense of what I’m looking at. I am in Leadville 3 months a year so that is a big advantage to my previous time at sea level 51 weeks a year. I also have a pretty good ability to go into a zone that allows me to stay on the struggle bus for a long time without giving up. Never been on it for 24 hrs though. I have nothing to prove, I just like challenges. Even more, I like preparation for challenges. It gives me life goals and discipline. Money and financial earnings have much to do with others. Racing is all up to you. That doesn’t mean there won’t be a monkey wrench thrown into plans every once in a while but as the seller of MonkeyWrench.com, I understand it better than most.
Either way it will be a great weekend and a great few months in the mountains coming up.
