I think pretty much everyone agrees that one of the biggest problems we have in America is health care. Not just that its not ready available or affordable but that its run by the insurance companies and the government. The government says what they are allowed to charge and that’s what they charge. To make it worse, many of the hospitals OWN the health insurance companies. How in the world can you do checks and balances in health care if the insurance company and the hospital are the same people.
The last few companies that my wife has worked for are self insured with a policy to cover larger bills . Because they were self insured it was in their best interest to check every bill since they were paying it out of pocket. The hospitals overcharged by millions over the course of a decade. Charging you $100 for a box of Kleenex even if you didn’t use it. Add ons were customary and thrown in because most of the time nobody would notice. Unless you checked. It got so bad that my wife was thinking she could start her own business where she would double check all hospital bills for companies and keep a percentage of what she saved. She thought she could make $300K plus or more a year easily.
Illinois has a “if there is already a service nearby” law where if you have an Xray machine then nobody can open up an Xray only company within a certain distance unless you are another full service hospital. It’s the most ridiculous thing in the world. Keeps the prices sky high. An Xray in Texas is 25% of the price because they have private scanning companies to keep prices honest. Again, completely corrupt. Add in that hospitals don’t pay taxes because they are giving free health care to lower income people. So millions in profit, no taxes. Corrupt corrupt corrupt
Don’t get me started on prescription drugs. My daughter’s drugs are $15 with prescription, $1700 without. How do you even take that needed drug without insurance. GoodRx is amazing but doesn’t cover everything.
The problem is so big I don’t have an answer. It’s 100% not the government taking over. I would say one, no more non compete for doctors. Where legal, hospitals make their doctors sign them. Keeps them from competing against them. Two, if the government is going to get involved, let them provide the insurance for doctors so they can go private. You hardly see any private practice because of the cost of malpractice insurance. Make that affordable and you get more clinics and then the prices will fall. That’s all I got so far but its a start

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
Yes, the health care system in the USA is scary. I live in a northern European welfare state, and although it sucks paying around 50% in taxes, at least I will never get hit by a seven-figure sum for cancer treatment. All healthcare – except for some very expensive medicine – is “free” (paid by our taxes).
Having said that, even this system is far from perfect. More and more people take out private health insurance in order to avoid waiting lists in the public sector health care, so health care is not equal for all anymore.
It is a problem that is very difficult to solve. Let’s hope AI takes care of everything 😉
You’re lucky you don’t have to buy your own insurance.
Anyone who is self employed that buys individual or a family plan via the Affordable Care Act is ridiculously expensive. Big Monthly Premiums and Big Deductibles that go up every year. Medicare should be available for those 50 and over.
It’s a hugely inefficient fragmented industry that wants to stay that way.
Turquoise Health is a cool startup that shows pricing of procedures when they are able to get the data from the hospitals.
