My family’s into recreational flying, and we share a turbo Comanche Piper plane. Over the years, we’ve had hangars in Illinois and Naples/Ft. Myers, so you could literally fly between the two, park, and just walk home. It’s all about airport communities.
If you’ve never heard of them, imagine a neighborhood with 20-50 homes built around a runway instead of a golf course. These communities are all over the country. As a pilot, it’s a little tricky because there’s usually just one runway, and if the wind’s not in your favor, takeoffs and landings can get pretty hairy. You end up coming in at some funky angles.
My dad decided he’d rather have the convenience of a bigger airport, so now he rents a hangar at a large one and bought a house right across the street. Same idea, but now he just crosses the road to get home instead of stepping out onto a runway.
It probably sounds super fancy, but these aren’t jets. They’re airplanes that have been in families for generations. If you take care of them, they can be just as fast and efficient as newer turboprops—flying over 200 mph. The cost is comparable to a nice car, so it really depends on what you want to spend your money on. For my family, flying and traveling are our thing. Honestly, it’s often cheaper than you’d think but I’d say most times you could fly cheaper commercial. But you can’t hop on a plane, or take your dog, or avoid waiting times. You pay a little more but its true freedom to travel around.
The down side is as I sit here writing I hear the small jets constantly coming in and out for Thanksgiving. The private Naples airport probably has more private jets in and out this time a year than anyone. A lot of money heading south. These jets are a whole other income zone. I sat and watched them this morning and there was hundreds of millions in jets coming . THAT is another level of flying and freedom. I’ll need to sell a few more domain names for that
