So, I’ve waded through the waters of the aftermarket, and here’s my report. The commissions at both Afternic and GoDaddy are pretty crazy. If HugeDomains can pull off what they’re aiming for, they might disrupt those prices—but let’s get back to the big two.
First off, adding Boost to GoDaddy was a great move. In two weeks, I went from no offers and no sales in six months to one sale and three solid offers I’m currently negotiating. It might just be luck, but the results have been nothing short of impressive. I still cry at the 30% commission, especially since I also have these domains listed on Atom, but I’ve raised prices to account for it, and they’re still moving. Honestly, I love the people at GoDaddy. Everyone in the aftermarket has been super helpful and accommodating. While I’d love lower fees, they do deserve a premium for the support.
Atom has been great too. I’ve crossed $300K in sales this year, and the ones that sold on Afternic ended up going for more because they pushed the prices higher, which means more income for me. The site is slick and efficient, and the logos are top-notch. If it weren’t for the higher commissions, it’d be a 5-star experience. Either way, I highly recommend using both platforms together for the best results with quality brandables. If you have mediocre domains, though, they’ll probably get lost in a sea of better names.
When I say “higher quality,” I don’t mean $5K wholesale names—just domains that make sense for a business to use, which a lot of domain investors don’t seem to get. Too many portfolios are full of names that only make sense in the owner’s mind, with limited potential users in a world of 5 billion people. Learning what sells is an art, but once you figure it out and take advantage of these platforms, it can lead to solid cash flow.
