One of the stories shared by one of my marketing teachers emphasized the importance of not alienating your core audience while seeking new customers. The example used was Harley Davidson. A young and enthusiastic marketing executive suggested that since more women were buying their motorcycles, HD should focus on marketing more towards them to tap into a potential large female customer base. HD embraced this idea and launched commercials targeting women riders.
However, they overlooked a crucial fact – even though half the world’s population is women, only a small percentage of them were interested in owning a motorcycle, particularly a traditionally “manly” Harley Davidson. Despite investing significant funds into catering to women, the sales to females did increase, but the problem arose when they observed a considerable decrease in sales to male customers. This perception that HD was becoming a “chick bike” adversely affected the brand, leading to a greater decline in male customers than the gain in female customers.
A similar scenario occurred with Bud Light, where in an attempt to attract new customers, they ended up alienating their existing customer base, resulting in a substantial loss of sales amounting to billions. Had they taken a lesson from the marketing course I underwent, they might have avoided tarnishing the reputation of Bud Light. The key takeaway here is to strike a balance between attracting new customers and maintaining a strong connection with your core audience.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
