The above photo is something that happens every day at the nursery. We have trash cans at the nursery by the parking lot. It’s really meant for us but our customers like to use it to clean out their cars. As you can imagine since we are out in the country, the critters love to scour the garbage cans. So if we put food in them it can attract rats and raccoons. Rats aren’t great for business and raccoons prefer to tip things over and eat off the ground instead of dumpster dive. This all leads to a pick-up-the-trash-every-morning scenario. Despite the words right across the front it is graciously filled with fast food wrappers daily. 90% of those being McDonalds. I knew their chicken biscuits were good, but apparently they’re better than I thought. I guess I should be thankful people at least use the trashcans. That used to not be the case.
When I was a kid it was not uncommon for people to roll down their window or open the door and throw their trash out. Right into the ditch or the parking lot and never think twice. I know younger people can’t fathom that but they did……ALL the time. Today people would hunt you down and throw it back in your car but back then they would just shake their head and think less of you…but forget about it 5 minutes later. I credit the culture change to one thing… a crying Native American commercial.
Things got so bad in America in the 70s that the government knew they needed to do something. So they spent millions making and running a series of commercials showing people throwing trash on the ground and then panning over to a Native American chief crying. They included a close up shot so you could see a big tear rolling down his cheek. It exuded the thought, “Don’t trash our sacred land” using a person that represented our country. The slogan was “Keep America Beautiful” and it was memorable. Every time you’d throw something on the ground you’d think of him and regret making him cry. Of course back then they called him the “Crying Indian” which has necessarily changed as we’ve learned our geography.
I thought about putting a cardboard cutout of myself crying that said, “Keep the Nursery Beautiful (and the raccoons out of the trash)” but decided against it. So we’re going to introduce Sally the Sunflower who will say “Feed your plants, not the raccoons.” The raccoons won’t appreciate it, but our morning crew will.

Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. There are some interesting studies about the use of signs to prevent littering, see for example:
