I may have mentioned it here in the blog but my wife and I had our home heavily damaged and my town wiped out 20 plus years ago in Ogden Illinois. I know firsthand what it feels like to have a tornado touchdown and roll right on top of you. I was one of the few homeowners to have a basement so I never really felt unsafe but the sound is something you never forget. We only had one die but the destruction was massive. The sound of complete destruction around you. When I came out I could not believe the destruction. Cars in trees and trees like broken matchsticks. There is no more powerful force than a large tornado that touches down. My house was the house it dropped over and caught one side hard but starting at the house next door and the rest of the town, everything was pretty much wiped off the foundation. Even the watertower was knocked down. You know its high winds when a watertower is dropped. While I never wish that on anyone I am glad I went through it. I learned the importance of building structures that keep you safe. My new home has a safe room in the basement with steel beams over one small room. And my sump pump has a backup that is hydro and will never stop working. Add some food always there and while I hope to never need it. If something happened again and we got trapped we would be as safe as anyone in the country down there. My hearts go out to all the families of the tornadoes across the country. The only positive is the are about to feel the love of their fellow countrymen. Things like this bring out the best in people and I know first hand. I had families from all over the nation send our town gifts, food, and financial help. It was so beautiful. If only the world was like that without tragedy
