Today Alabama once again plays for the national championship. If it seems like they are always playing for it that’s because they are. They’ve been in the final four 7 of the last 8 years. I spent part of my grade school years in Tuscaloosa and it was my first experience with sports other than what I played. In the 70s, Alabama had a coach, maybe the only coach, that was a bigger idol in Tuscaloosa than Saban, Bear Bryant. Under Bear Bryant they also won National Championship after National Championship. While I was there I never saw them lose, they lost one or two overall but they NEVER lost at home. As a kid I just thought it was how you do it. You don’t lose at home. I had no idea that Alabama was one of the best programs in history. To add to the fire I played soccer for the local gradeschool. Just a simple YMCA team. Except that team didn’t lose, not even a goal scored on us. And that little school team went on to win the entire Alabama State Championship. I only lost one or two games the next 5 years. I had no idea I was lucky to land on a good team or maybe I was the good one. I did score a lot of goals with one year I had almost 50 goals in one season. Regardless, Alabama put a sense of pride in me for competition that I still have to this day. I also went back to college there. I thought about going other places but when I visited I knew immediately it was home. While there we weren’t considered the best in many things besides football but we all thought we were or someday would be. Now I go back and it’s incredible how the school HAS become educationally excellent.
Nick Saban, Bear Bryant and Alabama built this. With their income and tradition. It’s how great things are built. Success breeds success. When you are successful people want to be part. They want to be on the best team, work for the best company. And by adding those great people you continue your success and it goes on and on and on until someone else starts to take your talent for one way or another. Kirby Smart at Georgia is one of those people that is taking talent away from Alabama. They have an incredible team with many players as good as those on Bama. But he isn’t Saban so he will always be second fiddle. Saban and his team has beat them 7 times in a row. So while Smart is saying “help us beat Bama”, Saban is saying nothing more than “You want to play for Alabama?”. That’s my goal, to be so good personally or in a business that simply asking people to join is an honor and they know they will be better for merely being part.
