So I found myself in the underground world of Twitter and Instagram handles the last few weeks. Somehow I ended up in a rabbit hole of the people that buy and sell social media handles. Because it’s against Terms of Service but not illegal, all the risk is in the buyers. 99% of the sellers are computer programmers that snap up names when they become available. Running scripts that search for names by the millisecond and if it comes available or someone makes a mistake it gets swooped up. There are a few people that do this and have some incredible handles. The problem is a risk of buying from someone because there really is no escrow so unless you have the name in hand you easily could get scammed. I was inquiring about a name and as we were about to close a deal all the chat on discord started disappearing before my eyes. He/she was deleting their side of the conversation. They got spooked or something and decided to leave and make sure there was no trail. (I always take screenshots)
It also could be taken away if Twitter decides they think you may have purchased it. They will close a handle down with no questions asked and no way to challenge it. All that being said you can get some good names. No I’m not sharing where, how, or what merely saying it’s out there. It’s still the wild west but at least there’s still gold in them hills. Just have to work for it and deal with a lot of risks.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
Hi Shane. I’ve been brokering the purchase of social media handles for my clients for 15 years. This isn’t quite as new a thing as you may think! But yes, it can be tricky. There are escrow services for this as well, including Escrow.com, which fully supports these transactions. Just ask your Escrow.com account rep for how to configure such a transaction. There is also Scrowise.com, a smaller player that focuses exclusively on escrow for handles. I don’t think Scrowise is licensed however. Glad your transaction went through smoothly.
Great info Bill. Really appreciate you sharing. I didn’t mean for it to come across as new. Heck I bought [email protected] email back 25 years ago. As long as there have been handles there has been a business selling them. Great to hear there is a professional way of handling the transactions. Ironicaly I just bought a company today that owns a very very good handle. Bought the whole business just for the domains and handles
