I celebrated a birthday over the weekend. Given that some of my friends have health issues, I now celebrate the year, not just the birthday. The celebration was a bit more subdued this year because I was in full-blown Covid mode. I picked up the FLiRT variant somewhere during my crazy travel week the week before. Probably from my wife—she was at Summerfest in Milwaukee, and then we attended a big wedding in Seattle a few days later. It’s a gift you get from being in large crowds and taking six plane trips in a coffin of disease.
I call it the paper cut variety because it doesn’t take you out; it just takes away all your ambition. A big headache and a bunch of other nagging things. None of them stop you, but they make the day unpleasant, and you just wish it would end. The only positive I found was the blinders effect. It puts you in a cloud that only lets you concentrate on one thing at a time. I actually found myself more productive because I wasn’t worried about the whole pie of things to do but ate one piece at a time. I’d actually like to get back to that sometimes. Creativity and big thinking often hinder productivity, and I am no longer required in that role, so it’s an added way of thinking I’d like to adopt. Just want to do it without having Covid.
