One of my favorite places in the world is Mauna Kea. The top is at almost 14,000 feet and has what many consider the clearest view of the stars in the world. It’s also the reason why there are so many telescopes at the top. But there is a huge conflict going on right now. 3 years ago when we were here a company was trying to put a 4 billion dollar telescope at the top and the local residents protested hoping to stop the permit that would allow it. They view the mountain as sacred and felt like the telescopes currently up there were enough. Protestors closed the road and didn’t want anyone going to the top. I had come all the way to see the stars so I sat down with the protestors and told them why I wanted to go to the top. To me its a sacred place. Maybe not for the same reasons but it’s a special place. They actually let me pass and go up there with my family. One of the most amazing things I’ve ever experienced.
Fast forward to this week, 3 years later. The Hawaiian Supreme Court ruled that the telescope could be built and proceed 3 years ago but the protests started up again just as we arrived. Except this time its a whole new level. The mountain is shut off to everyone. Even the scientist. And no amount of me talking is going to get me up there. There are thousands and thousands of people that meet each day at the base of the mountain. It has elevated into showing of pride for the locals. Our family went up there and I couldn’t believe all the people there. It was like a tent city with upside Hawaiian flags everywhere to represent their support for the mountain. I admit I was conflicted. I respect the island and the people that live there, but at the same time the telescopes are doing amazing work in astronomy The telescopes there have single handily advanced science by leaps and bounds.
I hope they come up with some form of resolution so that everyone can enjoy the mountain. I was hoping to go to the top and see one of the best meteor showers of the year from the best viewing spot in the world but I knew the protest would never allow it. Instead I moved down the mountain a little to about 6000 feet. It was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen. Words can’t explain so I won’t even try. You can see the Milky Way and 100 times more stars than you can see at home. 100s of meteors over the course of an hour. Almost makes me cry its so beautiful. Seeing the starts on Mauna Kea is something that I feel every person should do at some point in their life. It’s not easy and driving down in the dark is very difficult. But its worth it. Because it reminds us how insignificant we are in the scope of the universe.

Do u guys deliberately mess up the date? It’s not the first time that it says “domains for Sunday the 28th”…. it’s lile the 9th time this year or something…
Is there something wrong with me and I’m not getting the joke?
-z
Nope, not deliberate. Appreciate the heads up. It’s easy to forget a part of the post when you clone the previous one every day for 10+ years.
Ha. thanks for answering Travis. Add to it I have to do posts days in advance because I actually have pretty busy life in addition to this domain thing. summary, life is busy, routine is a bitch, and sometimes you forget things
thanks for answering, amazing, i kind of thought it was on purpose to see if folks are paying attention, but man for some of us obsessive types lol.. Thank you!
