I’m glad I work from home now. Illinois gas prices have hit the 4th highest behind Hawaii, California, and Washington. We crossed $4 this week and it all comes down to a poorly managed state who sold all their revenue sources so they get it through gas taxes. The positive is we have a good state rebate for the purchase of electric cars, the negative is we are buying less gas which brings down the revenue they hoped for—leading to more added taxes.
I filled up my car for the third time this year. I didn’t bring it to Colorado this past winter and I’m running from my house instead of driving to meet my friends. Leaving me with less than $150 spent on gas this year. My wife is more often as she goes to work every once in a while and we take her car on road trips. Road trips that cross borders and get their cheap gas.
I’ve always felt the key to saving money and time is not what kind of car you buy but how close you can live to things you need and travel to. I realize many people save in housing by living out of town and pay for it in gas. They often don’t take into account their time. Time is precious. Paying a little more to have proximity is worth it to me and I know when I sell it will most likely be worth it to someone else. Obviously, that’s ideal and the money is not always there. There was a reason I lived 17 miles away from town for 3 years. It was what I could afford. But the goals were still the same. Live closer. Be in the car less
