I’m heading off for the week to go climb Mt. Rainier with my daughter and closest friends and their kids. One of the things that I am most thankful for is having friends that I have traveled the world with. We’ve always done it for some adventure. A race, a hike, something endurance oriented. But we always make time to do some fun things before and after. During most of them we all thought the same thing. We can’t wait for our kids to be old enough to do some of these things. One of those things was climb a few mountains with us.
As a parent I have done the lead by example method of parenting. I never needed to give a lot of speeches. I felt like my daughter always made decisions based on “what would my parents do in this situation”. We tried to establish positive norms. Norms like, getting up to exercise. Getting things done early and not leaving things unitl the last minute. Knowing the difference between don’t want to do and can’t do. Making time for things important. Work hard but make sure to have fun and give yourself some me time. As a parent I felt like I became a better person because I realized I wasn’t doing half the things I wanted my child to do. I became the person I wanted my child to become. She gave me reason.
We always take our daughter everywhere. While at the same time making sure our relationship stayed strong. We always knew the time without kids in the house would be much longer than with them. We wanted our daughter to see things. One of the things my wife and I regretted was our parents worked so much they never took us anywhere but Florida or a local getaway . We took them but they were local and cheap. Nothing wrong with that but given the chance, we wanted our kid to know it was a big world with places to see and people to meet. That it was way more than the beach or the corn of Illinois.
While I’m looking forward to the challenge of Rainier I’m really looking forward to spending some time with my daughter. There’s going to be some complaining because its going to be difficult but I’ll stop after a while :). Like the last mountain we climbed there will be memories we’ll have forever. Stories to tell her children and her friends. It will also give her confidence and remind her that she can do anything she wants to do. Even get to the top of the mountain that’s in the distance. And as the saying goes, there will be many more mountains to climb for her. With and without me.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
Good luck on Mt.Rainer climbing with your daughter Shane. Learnt quite a lot from reading your personal journey with your family and business .
I hope to embark on some adventures with my twin boys who are 13 now.
You definitely should. I can tell you they will remember these trips their entire life
