One of the hardest things for people to grasp is the concept of doing a ton of work for no pay and for no audience. You hear speeches of success there is often a common theme. It wasn’t successful right out of the gate. Where everyone fails is not having the fortitude, the belief, or the finances to work at something for weeks, months, and years for nothing but the joy of trying to build something. It’s something I understand well. I have been there. Many many times. I’ve had websites that had less than 5 readers for the first month and under 50 after six finish with a million a month before I sold it. This blog was read by my Mom and Francois of Domaining.com only before it finally started getting readers.
Regardless of what you are starting this is most likely going to be how it goes. Be prepared. If you aren’t, don’t try. If you are going to do it with partners, make sure they understand that it will be tough. There are reasons why companies are started in garages and basements and when people are young. Its one of the best time to live on nothing and be able to put all your time and energy in for little early return. It’s when you can sacrifice.
I’m 52 and I still have the build it in the garage feeling. Its my hobby , my fun time. It’s why I am here still writing. It’s 100% not because of the money. I love looking through the list of domains and dreaming about all the possibilities. I like writing my daily thoughts here. It gives me pleasure. That’s what life is about. Doing what gives you pleasure. It doesn’t matter how many people are watching you enjoy it.
