I had braces when I was younger. Headgear and the whole works. I sucked my thumb into Kindergarten and that didn’t exactly help my cause of having straight teeth. Braces in High School only added to what was not my most handsome period in time. The 80s hair fashion didn’t help either. The end result was pretty good. Nice and straight. Fastforward 35 years.
Nobody tells you that age makes your teeth crooked. You know that they can get dingy in color but you don’t think that they slowly collapse on themselves as you get older. If you ever look at someone over 50 look at their bottom row of teeth. It starts looking like a train wreck. Teeth stacking on themselves. Upper row, the canines always turn in. It happens to literally everyone. But it doesn’t have to. If you wear a retainer. A $200 retainer set would keep all your teeth in their same spot forever if you wear it a couple nights a week. I wore mine for years until I didn’t.
One day I look in the mirror and realized my teeth were starting to all turn. So I had a retainer made to stop it. Wore it for a few years and got a puppy. Puppy eats retainer. So I go to the dentist and tell him that rather than just get a retainer what would it cost to get invisalign or similar. Turns out my insurance covers orthodontics and covered most of the cost. He shows me what it would do to my teeth. From the front it looked like it turned the canines back and straightened the bottom. But when you look from an underneath and over the top view of the teeth it literally opened my entire mouth. My mouth was shrinking. So I got them.
I am not going to lie. I had no idea what I was getting in to. I have to wear these trays every day, all day, for 10 months. Every two weeks I put in a new tray. I also have these glue dots on certain teeth to put pressure on them at a certain point. It hurts. Usually a few days but there is pressure at all times. You don’t really notice them but my Ss are a little sloppy so I take them out for meetings and important conversations. I will say this though. My teeth already are noticeably straighter and its only been two months. For those that want to straighten their teeth and not wear braces and to have the ability to take them off this is the real deal. About $4K cash or quite a bit less with some systems online or with insurance.
You only get one set of your own teeth. People judge you by your smile whether you realize it or not. They base your age and your financial situation on your teeth. I don’t exactly care what others think of either but I won’t lie, I care what I look like. It makes me feel good to be thin. My clothes fit better and good teeth can help compensate for the hair that is running for the hills. If getting new hair was as easy and getting straight teeth I would have Brad Pitt hair. Until then I’ll just keep smiling.
