I don’t think there has ever been a better opportunity to make money that there is right now. There’s a shortage of so many things. Prices are rising quickly and people have a lot of money to spend. I don’t think I’ve seen a time in my life where people question price less. That’s a good thing from the sales side. Value of money is a different side but that’s for a different opening. If you can source, you can make a ton of money. I have always prided myself in finding things and using my experience to figure out how to get it when others can’t. For instance, in the spring, growers allocate plants. There are always more orders than plants so they take their orders and then give people portions of their order. Companies each handle it differently but generally they allocate based on age of the account, average days of pay, and size of the order. There are a lot of customers that have perfect scores so its hard to get ahead using this ranking.
But in the Fall there is no allocation. It’s also the same product that’s going to sell in the spring. They sell as much as they can and then allocate in the spring. So I order in the fall. The key is you have to take it and pay for it then. Which has to big issues. One, it ties up your money all winter, which is essentially 5 months. Two, our winters can be harsh and you could lose the product if you don’t take care of it. I’ve got a pretty good system of holding the plants and money is cheap. A lot more money is made having nice products than it costs to borrow money to buy inventory. At least right now. I also put in an order in spring and get my allocation. Its worked very well the last few year and everyone wonders why we have such a great selection when others don’t. I did mess it up a little last year. We actually sold through most of it in the fall when it was meant for spring. Made for a record fall but kept things a little tighter this spring than normal. But I had back-up plans and filled the holes pretty well.
Domain investors know as well as anyone. Quality inventory is everything. It starts with having it. Moves to getting it at a great price. Finishes with selling it for as much as you can get for it at that time and taking that money to restock the cart. Because the surest way to not hit your goals is to not have enough inventory to meet it. If you don’t, you’re sunk before you get into pricing, marketing, and promotion. So far I’ve done OK. I think I can get better, but I feel I’m better than most. But I better be after 25 years of being in the plant industry. I’ve seen some things. And business is business. It’s no different in domains. Quality and depth of inventory is how we make the most money.
