Yesterday I had one of my first hard weekday workouts for the current marathon training sessions. It was a 20 minute warmup, 10 times 4 minutes at 6:20 per mile pace with 3 minutes rest, and 20 minutes cool down. 6:20 isn’t usually a big dale but to get 14 miles of workout and have to be at work at 7:30 is tough. I really have to get out early.
I woke up a lot during the night because I was thinking of the run. Its odd being a 52 year old man and still being nervous about a workout. I know its going to hurt but looking forward to where I stand in my conditioning. It was going to be a good measure. So I got up at 4:15 and headed out. It actually was no problem at all. My heart rate never broke 150 and averaged under 140. There is no better measure of how hard you’re working as your heart. Mine told me I’m ready for more. I cranked through the 4 minute sections and was more nervous about being late for work or being exhausted in the afternoon. I was neither and the high I got from crushing my workout got me through the whole day and gave me new life for my workouts this week. I have another big one this weekend. 18 miles with 12 of them at 6:45. That’s another test of my ability to hold pace. And my ability to put in a hard day at work after running 18 miles. Both tough.
As you can tell I love competition. Even if the only people left to compete against at my age is my watch and myself.
