Went to my first big in person conference the beginning of this week. It was in Columbus Ohio and my plan as to wear a mask. I had heard from Travis about his family going to conferences lately and several vaccinated people coming back with Delta. So I was going to wear a mask.
So I walk into the show floor. A HUGE floor with a few thousand booths. A agriculture show with plant and product vendors from around the nation. A…not…one…mask. None. And I mean literally none. I wore my mask going in and I am not going to lie. I got so many looks that I took it off. I’ve never been one to fall for peer pressure. FOMO yes. Peer pressure no. But I said Fuck it and took it off. Everyone at home is vaccinated and if I get it , I get it. That being said, I made sure to not touch my face and I washed and sanitized my hands more than I have in months.
Like most conferences I didn’t get the sleep I normally get and had a few beers. Add in the 6 hours driving each day and I’m tired. Not covid tired but definitely remember how conferences can set you up for illness. As they come back you’re going to see Covid spiking again. I do feel for vaccinated it will be like getting the flu but for those that won’t, can’t , or are immunicompromised, it’s going to be a scary next few years. And yesterday reminded me why. People are feeling the pressure to get back to normal. Even when they know better they are not making good choices.
