Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Wednesday, September 28th, 2022

3%. That’s pretty much the industry standard in sell through rate in domains. The next goal is to make sure that 3% covers renewals for ALL your domains and the cost to purchase the old and replacement names of similar price. While that seems easy, very few are doing it. Buying is easy. Actually there isn’t anything easier in the world than spending money. The key is what are you selling. Domains are a game of sit and wait. The skill in the game is picking names that people want combined with getting them at a price that allows a margin to pay for all the names you didn’t sell. As I said early that is going to be 97% of what you own. Not many businesses in the world where selling 4 or 5% is killing it. This one is.

I am actually below 3% this year. I have 500 names and I’ve only sold 9. Fortunately thaose 9 have been over six figures. The positive is I made great profits on those names. They easily paid for renewals and their cost and still returned 5X . The problem lies in replacement. I don’t think I can replace those names with the profits after cost and porfolio renewal. At least not with similar quality. Its taking some deep deep digging to come close. At this point I’m actually reducing the quality of my portfolio which will be the first time that has happened since I’ve been domain investing. Although with cash being king right now I am probably picking the best year possible to go more cash. Still 3 months left in the year so a lot can still happen

  1. I think 1%-2% is the industry standard. 3% would be a game changer for most, because it means they’re selling 50% more domains per year.

      1. I think you’d need to be a broker or do outbound to hit those numbers for a fair-sized portfolio. I’m basing the 1%-2% on people who show real data (like Mark Levine and Logan Flatt) and background conversations with some of the biggest portfolio holders.

      2. I’ve been running at about 2% for the past few years. I’m at 2% so far this year with a few months to go, but it might be pretty dead for the remainder of 2022. I hope not.
