I spent the past few days in Baltimore at a plant show—the largest in the country. If you’re looking for gardening supplies, it’s the place to be. I was scouting new products for Botany and the garden center.
Although I’ve traveled extensively across the U.S. and the world, this was my first time in Baltimore. Honestly, all I knew about the city came from watching The Wire.
While it’s not quite like The Wire, the city does have its challenges. The architecture is stunning, but to be fair, it was the dead of winter and very cold during my visit. That said, the real issue seems to be the workforce.
Every place I went was staffed by people who just didn’t seem to care. Almost every establishment had trash everywhere, and employees were chatting instead of working. One particularly bad experience was at Shake Shack—a rare treat for me since I almost never eat there. It wasn’t busy, which should have been the first red flag. I ordered through a self-service kiosk, and it took 45 minutes—yes, 45 minutes—for my food to arrive. When it did, it was terrible.
This pattern repeated itself everywhere I went. If the corporate owners of these national chains saw the state of their stores, they’d be horrified. The photo I took at Chipotle is a good example—I thought Chipotle might be an exception. Nope.
The only bright spot was Phillips Seafood. The food was excellent, and the service was great.
Overall, Baltimore is a beautiful city, but of all the places I’ve visited in the past decade, its commercial spaces stand out for being in poor condition—literally and figuratively.
Quote of the Day: “Anyone can love a perfect place. Loving Baltimore takes some resilience”. -Laura Lippman
