I was today years old when I realized that we say 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc because they are the last two letters of the spoken word.
Here are a few more things I learned the last few weeks
Bluetooth technology is named after a Viking king, Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson, who united Denmark and Norway. The symbol combines runes for the letters “H” and “B,” representing his initials.
The term “OK” originated in the 1830s as an abbreviation for “Oll Korrect,” a playful misspelling of “All Correct.” It became popular during Martin Van Buren’s presidential campaign because his nickname was “Old Kinderhook.”
“Mortgage” comes from the Old French words mort (death) and gage (pledge). It refers to the loan ending either when it’s paid off or when the property is foreclosed.
The Phrase “Mind your Ps and Qs” The phrase originates from old pubs in England, where bartenders tracked tabs by noting “pints” (Ps) and “quarts” (Qs) consumed by customers.
