Went running the past couple of days in the Boone, NC area, and while we all heard about the hurricane and the rain it brought, I don’t think most people realize just how bad it was. When you think of hurricanes, you picture Florida or the Gulf Coast. You think of coastal cities and rising surf. You don’t think of it hitting this far inland.
The amount of damage here is crazy. There are trees down everywhere. They’ve been cut and moved out of the way, but they’re still there. There are so many that it’ll take years to properly clean up. Many of the state parks are closed—just too many trees to move and not enough budget to do it, especially now. You know what is cleared, though?
The hiking trails. The Trail Angels, as they’re known around the country, always do an amazing job. They’ve worked privately, cutting down trees, reestablishing creek crossings, and forging new paths through the water-damaged areas. While you can’t park in the usual spots because they’re closed, you can still find places nearby and access the trails. Thanks to the volunteers, they’re still marked and passable.
One thing that really stands out is how much water came all at once. Homes in lower areas were destroyed—some are still standing, but others have already been demolished. Creek banks are as wide as a river now, even though the water has receded to a small stream. Rocks that haven’t seen the light of day in centuries are now exposed where the ground washed away. It’s horrible and beautiful at the same time. But that’s nature. It’s been this way for millions of years, and it’ll recover. The only thing that needs fixing is what man built around it.
