I often get dismissed for paying attention to trademarks. Generic words have thousands of trademarks across different categories. If you get too caught up in that, you’ll never buy generics.
That said, if there’s a trademark by a large company in a category where the domain clearly fits best, there’s no doubt the value takes a hit. It shows there’s demand, but it also shows you’ll have trouble defending your brand. Worse, you might have trouble keeping it.
To dismiss that without any thought is rolling the dice. Most domain investors have successfully navigated this stuff and just go on with business as usual—leaving it up to the buyer. If they come, they come. If they don’t, the price adjusts.
I think there’s definitely merit to focusing more on picking solid SLDs and keywords than worrying too much about trademarks—especially with ultra-generic names. But if it’s a term we instantly associate with one company, it’s worth digging a little deeper—or passing on it altogether if the price falls into “maybe” territory.
Another topic which I will cover in a more in depth stand alone article tomorrow is the increased focus of domain investors in buying BIN listings on marketplaces. More than every its becomming difficult to find quality inventory so domain investors are scouring listings to find value. What determined value is different to each type of investor. People like Andy Booth will pay mid six figures for the highest quality one word because he knows he can sell that for seven figures and higher which is a great profit. Tomorrow I’ll publish a post with all the tools and some hints for finding them

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.* All names chosen by us. (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
