Below is another look at a few recent domain flips and flops, with recent data courtesy of DN Journal and historical data from NameBio.
Flips
- PDN.com – Sold recently for $27,900 at Sedo, vs $12,000 in 2007. Picked up by Paula Deen Ventures, which recently announced it was launching Paula Deen Network, “a subscription-based digital network available only on computers and mobile devices“. The new company picked up an estimated $75-$100 million investment around the time of their launch.
- MegaBackup.com – Sold recently for $4,999 at Sedo, vs $4,000 in 2011. Extremely thin flip if the owner paid 15% +/- commissions at Sedo….that’s a $750 cost, and only $250 in profit.
- LocalVibe.com – Sold recently for $5,500 at Sedo, vs $3,750 in 2011. A deals site, with a screenshot below. Website title says “Daily Deals, Discounts & Specials in Minnesota”
Flops
- Chat.de – Sold recently for $87,100 at Sedo, vs $470,000 way back in 2005. A whopper of a loss for someone(s) in the last 10 years. I assumed 15% commissions on the recent sale, which makes it a $396,000 loss. The domain has an Alexa rank near 1.2 million, and the site the domain currently forwards to is NSFW.
Note: I didn’t do an exhaustive search of the ownership history of each domain. There are likely cases where there were multiple owners between the sales prices I list.
