Below is another look at a few recent domain flips and flops, with recent data courtesy of DN Journal and historical data from NameBio.
Flips
- IncomeInvestor.com – Sold recently for $7,800, vs only $200 way back in 2003. More than a 30x return, but it took patience…..
- Lafin.com – Sold recently for $4,000 at Sedo, vs $350 in 2012 at GoDaddy. A 10x return in two years isn’t too shabby. Picked up by an individual in Paris, France, and “la fin” in French may translate to “the end”(?).
- LocalGenius.com – Sold recently for $14,000 at Sedo, vs $5,388 last year at Afternic. Whois shows the domain is still in transfer at Sedo.
Flops
- LOV.com – Sold recently for $91,800 at NameJet, vs $160,000 in February 2012 at DomainNameSales. OUCH, that’s a nearly $70k loss before factoring in the NJ commission. At $160k, this was the #25 .com sale in 2012 on the DN Journal sales charts.
They had big plans, and you can see their screenshot from the end of 2012 below. Per their Crunchbase profile, “you’re going to love lov.com, the ultimate online beauty destination. Here’s a place to discover countless beauty brands – everything from skin care to make up to fragrance – all at the best prices available.”
Note: I didn’t do an exhaustive search of the ownership history of each domain. There are likely cases where there were multiple owners between the sales prices I list.
