Below is another look at a few recent domain flips and flops, with recent data courtesy of DN Journal and historical data from NameBio.
Flips
- OAI.com – Sold recently for $39,999 at NameJet, vs $20,000 in 2011 at Sedo. Picked up by an individual in China. All vowels may increase its rarity and collectability, and OAI is also a popular abbreviation for many phrases, businesses and organizations.
- Zerum.com – Sold recently for $3,124 at Sedo, vs $1,530 in 2012 at Afternic. Domain is currently parked and under privacy protection, but my guess is an upgrade from the developed .co.uk.
- Coin.org – Sold recently for $75,000 via Domain Guardians, vs $4,000 a year ago at Afternic. That’s a heck of a return….$71,000 gain before commission in a year. The domain currently redirects to DigitalX.com, with its tagline “Your life is digital. Your money should be too.” A linked screenshot is below. Acquired by digitalBTC, which is one of the few publicly traded digital currency companies.
Flops
- YapYap.com – Sold recently for $4,500 at Sedo, vs $4,000 in 2011 at Sedo. Factor in an assumed 15% commission, and that’s a couple hundred dollar loss over a 3+ year hold. Looks like the seller didn’t quite achieve the price they were hoping for —- the screenshot below is from today, but was the same back in February of this year.
Note: I didn’t do an exhaustive search of the ownership history of each domain. There are likely cases where there were multiple owners between the sales prices I list.
