When I first started in this domain space I started with a niche. Plant names. I certainly own plenty of them but then I decided to take a turn and start trying to buy names that people would pay good money for. Plants are great and I know that industry as well as anyone but my field just doesn’t pay up for category names. The money turned out to be people that want the names to use in completely different areas. I sold boxwoods to a computer company and Hortica to an insurance company. That’s when I figured out I would have much more success with words that can be anything. That didn’t define or have to be used for any one thing. The exact opposite thinking for that time. Keywords where king. I didn’t make a lot of money parking like everyone else but I made actual sales. Enough to get me here. Now I have enough money I can add a little risk. I’m not stuck buying names privately and on Namejet and then trying to sell them for more. That model works and a nice living can be etched out of it. That is part of how I make money in domaining. But there is this whole world of buying and selling between investors. It scares some. Even makes them mad. Because they feel like its a game of hot potato. That someone is going to get burned in the end.
But its a real market and as long as everyone feels there is value it can go on a long time. It’s been a whopping 5 months. Yes five whole months and people are already calling for its demise. Sorry but even if it does fall apart its going to take a lot longer. This is the age old question of when do you get in. Or do you even get in at all. Its tough to get in to something that has surged like this. At least people like Elliot Silver are honest and admit they just don’t get it and they watch from the sidelines as all this money and activity goes on around them. Its better to sit and watch than to put money into something you don’t understand. Although I know I hate to watch people making money and I’m not participating. Yet it makes me feel good when others take a bath and I knew better to stay away.
The difference is that this market is moving so fast up that I have made more money already this year than I did all of last year. I don’t want it to crash nor do I think it is going to, but even if it did I’ll end up way ahead. I’m selling enough to get my original investment out and letting the rest ride. Because that’s how big amounts of money are made, taking out the original investment and a little profit and then taking the balance and keep doing what got you there. And for me, that’s investing in domains that others are buying . And that’s what this list is comprised of. As crazy and and numeric as those names may be. Here are today’s names. Click to see current prices.
Taxz.com Because Z is so much cooler than S. We’ll pretend it doesn’t have an E. 16 years old.
NightSpy.com 19 years old. Sounds a little creepy. But good for night vision or spying on girls. Still creepy I guess
CheckDNS.com Google it and look at all the sites offering this service. Tells you the value
CadSolutions.com Big Upgrade name for a ton of companies. Getting a good bid because of it
WBLL.net Looking like 4L.nets are starting to settle in around $250 which is 10% of the dot com…roughly
PHHH.com Another triple repeater. Seen more in the last week than I have in the last three months
GoatFarmer.com I doubt you’re going to sell it for a ton of money but honestly I don’t know the profit potential of farming goats
81067.com I’ve started buying 5N.com with zeros. 5N.nets as well
EVTT.com Already higher than most vowel V LLLL.com
LiquidSquirrel.com My favorite name on the list. Not for value but because it’s made me laugh thinking about it all day. No bidders
BigTorrent.com Everyone torrents but not everyone realizes they are
FVFR.com, EQWO.com, DZAB.com, OFYH.com, XKUG.com Here is your daily collection of cheap boats. May they float high
4XI.com Xi is a pinyin word and my guess is it is the reason its at four figures. 4 doesn’t usually give you four figures
CannibisJournal.com Sounds so official.
36919.com Very nice 5N CHiP. $4500 seems to be the going rate but we’ll see
7898.co I think these hit four figures in a year. And yet I don’t own a one. But the difference between me and other people is just because I am not an investor doesn’t mean I don’t understand the value. I never root against a TLD. Zero point to that
ZZCN.co The LLLL.co won’t hit four figures but they are on the move as well. But I still think they are terrible names to put your company on. I type .com every time. But as long as others think they are great then that’s all that matters. I sell lots of things at the nursery you couldn’t pay me to put in my yard. It’s not about what I like. I am the seller
318875.com and 668158.com I am a big fan of 6N chips. I’ve had a revelation and have adjusted my portfolio to include a large selection of them. I had been adding at $200 but those days are over unless you listen to the Three Bears and they’ll tell you I will get them for next to nothing eventually
81067.com, 84347.com, 63649.com, and 09232.com, 51410.com My opinion only, I think the 5Ns with zeros present value compared to other 5N.coms. Investors are naturally drawn to cheaper prices. Its why stocks split
NV.mobi Almost any LL.tld is worth owning. Of course depends on the cost and renewal fee
WKNZ.net, WBLL.net, NZZL.net, HZJY.net,
Z53.net With the fast rising prices of CCC.coms there was a small window to pick up the dot net versions cheap but that window is closing fast
3682222.com Yup 7Ns over $100. A whole new market is coming. I promised months ago not to put 7Ns on this list and I willdo my best to keep them to a minimum. Gotta draw the line somewhere. That is, until you erase it and move the line
GayPersonals.com Generic for Craigslist
002009.com I used to get caught up in zeros at the beginning because its not a real number. Now I am all about appearance, balance and flow.
jx65.com, zr85.com, rp39.com, and zr59.com I was just talking to an investor (who is 100X bigger than me) who is buying portfolios of these right now. He thinks they will double this year. I can’t disagree. I picked up a few dozen when they were under $20 so I’m almost there. I know, I know. These things are worthless and can’t and won’t be used as a website. But ironically when I sell them I still get real money
JustPorn.com Love this one. Ends tomorrow but it needs a preview day for you to take it in. I would not be allowed to build it out.
If you like numerics. Sedo has an auction of 100% great numerics. 4,5, and 6 number dot coms
Too many to list (and I’m lazy) So just follow the link.
FOR OTHER GREAT NAMES FOR SALE MAKE SURE TO VISIT CAX.COM
Unpainted.com Naked furniture is a term that is used for furniture that is not finished or painted yet. This name works perfect for that market. 1999 name
DSMV.com These bottom boats seem to be the most active in the category. 16 years old
Assertivos.com Means assertive in Spanish. This market just hasn’t caught on. Yet its the the third most spoken language in the world
WIL.org All these lists and I barely ever see LLL.org up for sale. This one is doing well
WJR.org Maybe its like buying a new car. You think you are the only one that has one but once you buy one and start paying attention, there are a ton of others just like it.
MicroTherapy.com Everything is smaller in the future. Except numeric domains
KreditBank.com If Kabbage with a K can make it, Kredit Bank will do fine
Kivea.com Nice smooth 5L.com. Sounds like a Shampoo
AEBA.com China bad. Acronym good
NGK.net, HMD.net, PKN.net, QDN.net, MXQ.net Man does Namejet sell a lot of LLL.nets
YTYT.com I think this goes for over $8K. Maybe I just hope it does
VYYY.com Poor V, kills a perfectly good pattern
MMBJ.com mmmmm Bj. Sorry Mom
SpearGuns.com Media Options is finally letting go of their original names and moving on. Spearfishing.com and SpearGuns.com. It’s the names they started with. Great names
JapaneseFood.com I’m ashamed to know I don’t know the difference between Chinese and Japanese food. Only sushi
52413.com and 31417.com Two of the type of 5N.coms I talked about earlier
NUQO.com These CVCV are doing extremely well. But as I’ve stated. They don’t sell well to endusers. And also as I’ve said, I don’t care. They sell well enough to other domain investors
Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. (if you have trouble with the contact form its shane@ this domain name) I Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by me, Shane . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything I say is based on my own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or my opinion is correct. I hand choose my names but I am paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good
I am not completely on the sidelines when it comes to more speculative (and risky) buys. In the last few months, I have bought and sold a few LLLL.com / LLL.com domain names and would buy others for the right price. I prefer to speculate on good keyword .coms that continue to sell well for me.
Have a good weekend.
Hey Elliot,
Can you give out some of your secret sauce on sales? Do you reach out to end users or just wait for an inquiry? Same question goes to Shane. Proactive or reactive? Form letter or phone call? At this point I have always waited for the inquiry.
Cheers!
Steve,
I’ll let Elliot answer that on his blog. As for me. I either wait for the inquiry or sell it at an auction house. I have reached out exactly 4 times in 7 years. Sold three of the four but they were easy easy sales. The company absolutely needed the name and i made them good offers. More outreach coming and I’ll explain in the near future.
Elliot,
Sorry but you’re on the sidelines. The two you mentioned are the safest and lowest risk areas in this new market. Most people are buying and selling dozens of names a day in the market. Completely different than your strategy. Again, your strategy is safe and you are amazing at it. It got you hear and no reason to risk your livelihood. You can laugh at us when we all blow up.
Thanks for the compliment.
I don’t think any domain investing strategy is “safe” per se, but what I do works for me.
What auction house? Namejet? No reserve or reserve? Thanks.
Steve,
Namejet, Godaddy, Sedo, and Flippa. I have sold on all of them. If I got the name for under $100 usually no reserve. If it is a very
liquid name again no reserve. The market will bring the current market price. All the rest I reserve a little above what I paid. With Namejet I make sure my reserves have a chance to get hit or I won’t list. Auction houses are there to sell names and they don’t want to list names with super high reserves. Wastes bidders and auction houses’ time.
