When I was in my twenties I used to like to write to celebrities and see if they would respond. I wrote hundreds of letters to people I admired. Tom Hanks, Barbara Walters, many Nobel Peace Price winners, and a few athletes. The results were exactly what you think they would be. Half never responded. A quarter sent auto signed pictures back. Another quarter sent a picture with some kind of well wish. And the other quarter wrote a nice letter back. Twenty five percent seems high for personal letters but you have to remember that many of these people were not super famous people. There was no Internet so second tier famous was no where near famous as they are now. Even finding their address took a lot of work. My favorite response was from Linus Pauling
Linus Pauling won a Nobel Peace in Science…..twice. Pauling established the basis for understanding protein structure. In 1954 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry. Nine years later, Pauling was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work against the use and proliferation of nuclear weapons. But he was best known for showing the benefits of vitamin C. So I wrote him and said thank you for all his amazing work. And I received a nice response to this effect.
“Mr. Cultra, thank you so much for the kind words about Dr. Pauling. Unfortunately Dr. Pauling passed away last year. I’m sure you would have appreciated all the nice things you had to say. To say thanks we have included some signatures we had laying around that we thought you would like”. In the envelope were cutout signatures and an autographed photo. Obviously I was a little embarrassed but the death of Linus Pauling really didn’t make the nightly news and again, there was no Internet to look these types of things up. But I remember his autograph and letter back more than any other thing I got back. Enjoy your Sunday. Here are today’s names. Click through to see the current price

I bought Bra.info recently. Lot of good .info names are coming in expired auctions.
Not to be pedantic but that’s 125% up there. Great story though.
Ha. I got more letters back than I wrote 🙂
I wrote Will Clark two times back in the 80s. Both times sent back autographed cards.
Went to Giants spring training game few months back and Japanese kid sat next to us. Was wearing Will Clark autographed hat. But he didn’t even know who he was. Said old guy was signing autographs next to dugout. Had to set this kid straight. Will was the thrill before steroids era.
RP
Those were the days. Going to spring training and trying to get autographs. I waited for hours to Delino DeShields. Yup frickin Delino Deshields. But he was a up a coming star…..kinda
Let’s Go Expos! 🙁
Delino deshields was a donruss rated rookie. Didn’t pan out for him. Like Pete Incaviglia and Wally Joyner.
We’re so old that deshields jr now playing.
Linus Pauling, cool! He was someone I really admired… Bought his book on vitamin C.
