On Thursday while at work, I had to go to the main county building and get my picture taken. I’m not sure why, my best guess is that they want a nice photo for a press release if I die. I can’t think of any other reason, the lady taking the picture didn’t know either.
The picture was taken in the Public Relations office, I’ve never been in that office and I think I’ve been in the county building once in 10 years. I didn’t know the extent of the public relations staff, I just figured it wasn’t a real position or county division and that every press release from the county was done by whomever needed one published.
I still don’t know how many people work in PR, but I saw at least 6 separate offices, with title like “digital marketing specialist” and other associated terms. Probably the main reason I assumed that the county didn’t care much about PR is because of how shitty the county domain is. They use a hyphenated acronym, F-ing .net for the website and email, lol.
As I was getting my picture taken I made small talk about the PR division, then I asked why they were using that domain and wondered why it hadn’t been changed. She said something to the effect that I would have to ask I why that domain was used. I thought to myself, What? I’m asking you because there is a whole section of this building dedicated to promoting the County and it’s business and you guys are using a horrible domain. The Pr division should go and tell the IT department that they need a better domain, for at least the public facing information distribution.
Just think the amount of time and money devoted to this mission, with the public accessing the information through some crazy ass, horrible domain. Not only can no one remember the hyphen or the extension, but the name looks like a spammers delight, there’s no authority to the name. I’m not sure why they decided on the .net, but even a .us would be way more intrinsic for a County government website in the US.
I think there are many points that domainers can take away from this, with the main thing being that not only does the general public not know much about domains, but professionals tasked with marketing and messaging don’t seem to know much either. We can use this knowledge void to help educate and sell them better names.

You are lucky if someone in a county PR office knows what a domain is. Why would they care about the domain name? One reason – if it means less work for them (which it should) they may care. Otherwise, prepare for blank stares…
