One thing I haven’t really seen discussed lately is the dramatically rising wages of U.S. employees. Many states are moving to $15 an hour wages and even in the states that don’t have it they are seeing wages rise by 20% or more this year. Causes? Unemployment at 3.5% and Trump closing the border. You’re kidding yourself if you don’t think that a huge majority of our service jobs are done by people from Mexico and South America. Presently the path to working here takes years and years. The H1B and other programs are small and they don’t possess the special skills that the tech companies use to bring people to work.
That leaves companies fighting for the “good” workers. I say good because there is a percentage of the work force that is bad. They simply don’t have either the work ethic or the skills to work. It is an advantage to companies that realize the value of good wages but definitely a short term hit to the bottom line as they adjust to the higher wages. Companies like Amazon who have incredible tech and have billions of dollars can’t buy their way in to filling positions. Undoubtedly it is going to lead to lackluster customer service but you’ll notice in some places more than others.
I do think its great for the economy. There is more disposable income in the US and the rise in wages will lead to more purchases. Unfortunately it will lead to higher debt as its been proven that regardless of wages, people spend more than they have. For businesses that’s a great thing short term. It can change on a dime and a big event that causes sluggish business could turn it all upside down. The corona virus is just the type of thing. Once business let people go and there is labor force available wages will stagnate again. I know that I have had my salaries increase 30% in 2 years but I also had profit up 100% so they were due the raises. Everyone is different but in my business the wages need to stay at or below 37% of sales. (we have our costs very well managed) We’re there but its going to take another big jump to keep it there with all the raises and the super high rates needed to add employees. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
