Domain Spotlight:

Below is another look at a few recent domain flips and flops, with recent data courtesy of DN Journal and historical data from NameBio.

Flips

  • GPV.com – Sold recently for $30,000 at TopNames.org, vs $5,950 in 2011 at NameJet. Picked up by Nathan Laurell, an entrepreneur and founder of venture fund New Frontier Holdings. “He is also a cofounder of energy.me, a retail energy supplier, and the founder of ampCNG, a transportation company focused on displacing liquid fuels with compressed natural gas. Prior to New Frontier, Nate was a principal and director at Infinium Capital Management, a proprietary-trading firm. Nate has been involved in start-ups since forming his first business in college, a company that built software prototypes for clients with unique intellectual property, many of whom held patents on business processes.” You can see the simple placeholder below.

  • TT.cc – Sold recently for $20,250 at Sedo, vs $1,650 in 2011 at Sedo. Picked up by a Chinese investor.
  • Ching.com – Sold recently for $11,000 at Sedo, vs $8,112 in January this year at NameJet. Not a huge return, but 15% in 6 months isn’t too bad….
  • MakeSomeNoise.com – Sold recently for $40,000 at Mike Mann’s Domain Market, vs $844 in 2012 at NameJet. Relatively quick 40x+ return, which anyone would love. Picked up by British media & publishing company Global Limited, “We’re proud to be leaders in commercial radio, it’s about keeping things simple, having the courage to stand up for what we believe in, and doing things differently. It’s why 23.2 million listeners* regularly tune in to our brands every single week.”

Flops

  • Hipe.com – Sold recently for $5,000 at NameJet, vs $5,105 in 2011 at Sedo. An $850+ loss assuming 15% commission. New owner under privacy protection, and the domain forwards to XU.com.

Note: I didn’t do an exhaustive search of the ownership history of each domain. There are likely cases where there were multiple owners between the sales prices I list.
