Domain Spotlight:

Below is another look at a few recent domain flips and flops, with recent data courtesy of DN Journal and historical data from NameBio.

Flips

  • Minorities.com – Sold recently for $5,000 on Flippa, vs $2,100 in 2012 at NameJet. The makings of a website are live (below). “Minorities.com is owned by D. C. Cowan Authors, LLC. Our mission is to promote diversity in the publishing world, provide books for minority youths, and give minority, low income, or indie authors affordable book services to help improve their published works. Minorities.com was established in 1997 and strives to be the #1 place on the web for minority issues and affairs.”

  • Overbet.com – Sold recently for $2,100 at NameJet, vs $1,200 in 2011 at Sedo. The domain is currently parked, and owned by Traffic Label Limited, an SEO company based in the UK.
  • 34000.com – Sold recently for $2,400 at Sedo, vs $1,050 in 2007 at Sedo. Currently owned by an individual in China.

Total randomness: the first Google result for “34000” is an article entitled, “Here’s What a Massive Ice Fishing Competition With 34,000 Holes Looks Like“. Picture below. Crazy Minnesotans…..

Flops

  • StateInsurance.com – Sold recently for $4,600 at NameJet, vs $15,200 back in 2010 at Sedo. Over a $10k, 70% loss. The new owner is under privacy protection, and the domain currently forwards to a lead gen page on Policy.com, offering free quotes from Allstate and Progressive insurance companies. The domain has an Alexa rank near 5.5 million.

Note: I didn’t do an exhaustive search of the ownership history of each domain. There are likely cases where there were multiple owners between the sales prices I list.
