Tomorrow I give a commencement speech for a local high school and I must admit, its the first speech I’ve been nervous about in a few years. I don’t really get nervous anymore because I do a live television show every week and have spoken to crowds of 1000 in the past. Speaking is easy if you’ve done it enough and you know you’re stuff. I’m pretty sure I could speak for an hour on any topic you put in a hat. I learned the skill through practice and by joining ToastMasters. Its one of the greatest organizations out there if you want to get better at public speaking. They go through games and challenges and they make you do it in front of the entire group. For instance, they have everyone write a topic and put it in a hat. You draw a topic and have to talk about that topic without a delay in speech more than 3 seconds or an uhh or an umm. Any of those and you’re done. Some people make it 5 seconds, some make it the whole 5 minutes. There were a bunch of other challenges we did that made public speaking so much easier. I got my nerves out in the classes. Television also helps. Once you’re comfortable in front of a camera, being in front of people comes much easier for most.

The commencement speech is a little more nerve racking because they don’t really care to hear me speak. They are seniors and I’m not famous enough to catch their attention. When I’m paid to talk I am much more comfortable that the group wants me there. I proved myself by getting invited. My only job is to show that I was worth the price. Here I’ve got to keep them from falling asleep and yearning for it to be over. Either way, it’s only 10 minutes and if it all goes to hell I’ll just throw in a quote from Lil Pump or throw out an F bomb, drop the mike and go home. That they’ll remember. Here are today’s names.
