I grew up in a family that had no boundaries. They made their home in Central Illinois but they made their excitement all over the world. My Grandfather was a great WWII pilot and continued to fly throughout his life. He was known to fly to Europe to get a matching dish that my Grandmother had dropped. Or so is the story. He was the only nurseryman I knew that had a Gull Winged Mercedes and a 1932 Rolls Royce. My Dad’s cousin was a sailor. Not many sailors in the middle of central Illinois but he certainly was. Quen Cultra built a trimaran in his back yard. Had he built a boat before? Nope. Did he build it? Yep. And then he hauled it to the Illinois River which he followed to the ocean at which he sailed around the whole damn world. Yes. For three years he sailed around the world and wrote a book about it. It was called Quee Queg’s Odyssee and for a young kid like me was amazing.
My family was full of adventure but none bigger than Quen. Quen died at the horn of Africa when a cyclone met a typhoon and capsized his boat, sweeping him into the ocean. Never to be found again. Google his name and you can read all about it. Or read this nice tribute to see how people thought of Quen. My grandfather and Quen prove it is not where you come from, its where you’re going that matters. It’s probably one of the reasons I’ve lived the way I do. I never thought living in a small town and a simple life meant you couldn’t do anything you wanted to do, anywhere you wanted to do it. And yes, my Grandfather sold the Gull Wing and the Mercedes. But not before he crashed one of them.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
Thanks for sharing the stories about your grandfather and your dad’s cousin Quen! That was a fine tribute that Dennis Marek wrote for Quen. “He (Quen) talked of adventure and trying daring things. I was somewhere between fascinated and terrified. He made me think new thoughts and new adventures…” 🙂
