So what is the value of having social media exact matching handles? My answer is a 100% I’m not sure. I I do know that it adds some value and presents a strong marketing package to someone that buys the domain. We all know that Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are a must have if you have any consumer facing company. While, like domains, you don’t have to have exact match handles, it certainly makes it easier for consumers to find you and know that the account is legit. I’m not sure even domain investors know how much money social media accounts go for. I was trying to by the company that owned a very very good Instagram account to go with a domain I own and I got out bid for $25,000 for the account by a New York Media company. Yes a marketing company bought the Instagram handle without anything else to go with it . They felt they name was so strong they could build a stand alone business on the name. I felt the same way and was actually going to build out the Instagram account and reverse package it with a domain that was almost the exact same. I also bought the company that owned @botany and in just the few months I’ve owned it, I have received one or two offers a week to purchase the name. Most are low numbers but one was pretty close to what I paid. Of course I want it to go with the dot com and have zero plans on selling it by itself.
I won’t lie, most purchasers don’t really care about the social media accounts when buying the domains and never even ask. Its only when they approach me later to buy the social media account that they realize its owned by the same person they bought the domain from. It’s the same reason why I don’t spend very much to acquire the account. Many companies just don’t see added value in the social handles. It was hard enough getting them to pony up for the exact match let alone asking them for more money if I throw in the social handles. Here are today’s names.
