Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Sunday March 3rd, 2019

Escrow.com

I have been fortunate to run with some amazing people over the years.  Much better runners than I will ever be but its worth it for them to slow down and find some good conversations and equal reasons for me to push it a little.  I was fortunate to run with Marianne Dickerson.  Marianne’s brother was the person that got me into running. He came into the nursery one day and we got to talking.  One topic led to another and he mentioned that a bunch of guys got together on Saturday’s and ran 10 miles.  No other days.  Just Saturday and at 8:30 pace.  I trained for 6 weeks and got the courage to go run with them.  I am still running that Saturday run 11 years later.  Although now its 16 to 23 miles and a minute faster.

Marianne was Barry’s twin. Marianne was a great runner and I could tell she had run in college.  Great form, looked like she could go for days.  It wasn’t until a run where she talked about some of her running stories that I realized she was an incredible runner “back in the day”. Like the one where she won the bronze medal in the World Championships in 1983.  Turns out, until 2017 when Amy Cragg took the bronze in the WC, Marianne was the ONLY female American to ever have a medal in the marathon at any Olympics or world championships.  She had that in her pocket and its actually on youtube.  Not many stories from 1983 can be proven with youtube video.

We ran a Hood to Coast in Oregon together and she seemed a little distant during the race and I assumed she was having a bad week.  Unfortunately it was much worse than that and the next year Marianne took her own life. You can imagine the heartache and sorrow among all her running friends.  An entire High School had been trained and looked up to her for 30 years.  Her High School here locally had become a running powerhouse. Completely built on her success in the 80s and continued on because success breeds success. But the burden of life was too much and she often said that the hardest part of winning that race is that she felt that there was nowhere to go but down.

It’s what I love and hate about running.  When you spend hours a day you grow close to people.  And with that closeness comes the joy and heartaches of life that they experience and share on the runs.  We’ve had a wife pass, a fellow runner die of brain cancer, but we’ve also watched men and women become successful in life and watch and hear their kids become great people.  Again proving, the journey is what we need to take in.  You don’t live life for the period at the end of the sentence.  Here are today’s names. Make sure to click on the names to see the current price and to help DSAD continue writing each day.
