Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Sunday September 8th, 2019

Escrow.com

I’ve been looking for a car but not real hard. I spend a lot of time looking but my trigger is on safety. Generally because my present car is in great shape. 7 years old but looks and runs like brand new. Because of the nursery I have a lot of cars and trucks. 30 something. I probably have one in every brand. I have everything from a SmartCar to a F350s. My father and grandfather collect Mercedes so I have seen or driven in pretty much every car they’ve made over the last 40 years. My father loves the Mercedes SUVs and has quite a few of them. I am all over the board myself on what kind of car to buy. I live 2 miles from work so the amount of driving I really get is limited. Gas mileage is really of no concern. But I live in Illinois so we have hot summers and cold, can be snowy, winters. So I’m down to a half dozen cars.

One the new Subaru Outback. I have 3 Outbacks and they have all been incredible. They only thing missing is Tech and the new one is a thousand percent better. I would easily buy one for myself but my wife and daughter both have one and having 3 in the driveway would look odd. I also like the Tesla but I’m not confident on what happens when all these cars age and start needing work. I like the Porsche Panamera. My friend has one and she loves it but garages it for a Subaru in the winter. Now I have to buy two cars. There are 10 other cars I’ve looked at but nothing is really a big upgrade from what I have a Ford Explorer Sport. Most likely I’ll drive it for a few more years and keep looking every night for something I’m not going to buy. Anyone else do that?

  1. If you are looking at SUVs, I have looked a lot recently for my wife and test drove several and the one that impressed me the most for balance of price and features is the 2020 SX Kia Telluride. I love Subarus and had a Forrester but had transmission fail at 60k miles. Talking to mechanics that is very rare and just unlucky but just saying you can’t beat Hyundai / Kia with their power train warranty. Bottom line is test drive a Telluride, you will at least put that vehicle in contention.

    1. Phil,

It’s funny you said this. The opening was inspired by a talk I had with a customer at work today about a new car and ironically he bought a Telluride and absolutely loves it. It looks like a Range Rover. We had 3, yes 3, parked next to each other in the parking lot. Definitely a hot new car. And I have an incredible mechanic at the nursery and we buy 2009-2012 outbacks and fix them up and sell them. If you do things yourself its incredibly cheap to fix up an outback. I took a junky one and literally put every single part new on the car except the engine itself for under $3K. That struts, ball joints, timing belt, sensors, rotors, pads, starter, alternator, and a few other things. I also have a mechanics account so I get parts at the same price as mechanics. In short, I don’t mind my car breaking down because I have so many and I am very fortunate to have someone on my team that can get it running in a day.

  2. Ha, ha! I live in northern Vermont. With our winters everyone has a Subaru to the point it’s a running joke. Can’t remember where you parked? Look for the Subaru. Can you have too many?

    1. Aline,

This is why I avoided buying one for years. I live in a very liberal town, I grow plants, it was just too cliche to own one. Then I drove one and saw how cheap they are compared to other cars and now I’ve bought 8 or 10 of them. I can sell a used one in good condition in 24 hours around here

  3. I would wait for the Tesla Model Y, but If purchase price and gas mileage are not a concern, you might consider the Toyota Land Cruiser.
