We had something nice happen at the nursery yesterday. A woman came to the counter and said she wanted to buy a tree for the next family that came in. She left $100 and the next family with kids that came in would get their tree free. It was such a kind gesture and about two hours later a nice family came in with two small kids and we let them know that a kind person had bought their tree for them. They almost cried. Not because it saved them some money but that someone they didn’t even know could be that generous. They were a young couple, he was from China and only been here a few years, and she was American. He asked if people do this as a custom and I let him know it was the first time we’ve ever had anyone do that but I think its a tradition we may continue.
In my opinion that’s what this season is all about. Not buying things off a list that someone gave to you. The most creative and thought out gifts are the ones that I seem to remember. I guarantee that family will look at their tree and think of the nice person that bought it for them. And most likely in the future they will remember that person and do something similar for someone else. A kind gesture that will be carried forward for many years to come.

I do that with coffee a few times a week. It’s hardly anything but on occasion pay for it with a couple $2 bills. Younger gen never seen a $2 bill before. It’s very funny. They’re not sure where to put it in the till and question if it is real.
