I always tell everyone that in order to be personally successful in any industry, especially a small industry, you should use your real name, be active, and be known for something.  Once you’re known for something, expand on it.   In domain investing I’m known for owning a nursery and loving plants so every time a good plant name comes up people think of me. It has led to me getting some great names I would have missed if it wasn’t for someone letting me know its up for sale or auction.  Just yesterday Travis and Jason Sheppard were nice enough to email me and show me some good hort names up for sale.  Names I didn’t see but absolutely loved.   Spring is so busy at the nursery that miss a name or don’t look at some of the “other” auction houses that I usually do and too many names fall through I wish I would have gotten.   So its sure nice when people think of me.

You’ll notice I don’t use a twitter handle “plant domains” or anything too defining in my marketing of myself. Although I do specialize in plant domains, I will buy any name I think offers resale value.  I just buy plant names because I have a fallback of a buildout because I actually grow the product behind it.  An insurance policy.  I prefer to use my name and my face as my brand.  Not that my name or face is special but I use it because its consistent and builds history.   People will remember they sold or bought a name from me and I can use that to build a personal relationship in the future.  And maybe they’ll think of me when something reminds them of our interaction.  Like send me a plant name.   Hear are today’s names.
