Domain Shane’s Daily List of Domains at Auction for Wednesday May 20th, 2020

Escrow.com

So we got a glimpse into the portfolio of Mike Mann when he sought out investors in his company. He sent out a deck to people for them to take a look. I won’t say the actual details, you’ll have to ask for the deck yourself, but I can say one stat. .2 % sell through rate. Yes Point Two. By the time you add in renewal costs, and any commissions that may had to be paid if the names were sold through a third party, and you have a cash flow negative aka losing money portfolio. And at scale. If you invest in something, anything, you invest because of three reasons.

  1. Its profitable and you want to be a part
  2. It could become profitable if it were scaled
  3. Something could be fixed to make it profitable

None of these appear to be the case to me. I would love to hear from anyone that saw the deck to give me their opinions. To me there were some star assets by the dozens and some pretty bad ones by the millions. The good news is based on stats, most of us have as good of a portfolio as the Real Domain King 🙂

Domain of the Day: BetterRecipes.com The name alone would be worth a grand or so but add in the head start given with the history and you can see why the price is where its at.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.

  1. Are some or most of those names Parked and making dividends while waiting to sell?

    1. I would assume many of them are. Parking is not what it used to be but times a million there is probably some decent revenue there. But has to be decreasing year after year

  2. You’ve said for years it’s a money losing portfolio and I’ve always agreed based on the quality of the sold names.

Was phones.com and some of his other gems part of the deck or just the garbage hand regs?

    1. I’ve never been very impressed by most of the names we’ve seen him sell honestly. In fact, many of them I feel like are hand reg level type names. I’ve always thought it had to be a money losing portfolio as well.

I personally would much rather have a smaller portfolio of maybe 50-200 domains of higher quality, but everyone’s strategy is different.

  3. Brazil.org is a weird domain for me. I’m an American that has lived there before, and will likely be moving there for good later this year.

With that being said in Brazil they spell their country “Brasil” with a S.
So, I think this would need to be like an American charity or something? I don’t know.

    1. You could turn it into a tourism focused site for english speaking people looking to visit….

      1. A .org for tourism seems like a weird extension to me. Maybe to the average person it’s irrelevant though as most at least have heard of .org before.

  4. He may be losing money or maybe breaking even somehow or making a little if that’s a reason to do it but there are 2 points that come to mind:

    1. MM’s tweets/blog posts about the outlier sales – what’s the point? When the dead weight and renewals make that profit disappear. Showboating?

    2. When you have such a large domain portfolio, even if you are comfortably breaking even or making a little there is still a serious risk that the tide turns especially as new domains continue to gain traction. What is he going to do when he is caught with his pants down?

There is going to be one year when his names all start dropping.
