It was a miserable day here in Illinois yesterday. 38 Degrees and raining. So what better way to pass the day than to go do a 7.4 mile trail race in the pouring rain and slippery hillside. I figured nobody would show up and I could get an easy free shirt and medal, grab a sandwich, and call it a good day. Instead, hundreds of other New Year “gotta exercise” crazies showed up along side and gave it a go. It was one of the more difficult races I’ve run. Hard enough to keep your feet when it was flat, and this was up and down ravines. Some of which I could do nothing but grab roots and try and climb the hill. I usually road races under 7 minute pace and trail races around 7:30 but this one had me panting and wheezing to keep it under 8. My legs are still sore as I type this. And I do this shit for fun? I do it for things like today. I’m going to my Grandmother’s 90th birthday party. I have 3 of my 4 grandparents because they all were and are, very active (or as active as you can be at 90). I just hope my great grandchildren get to come to my 90th birthday. Here are today’s names.
