This summer I started participating in Cat Fishing tournaments on the Potomac river. A friend of mine needed a partner so I said sure sounds like fun. The tournaments usually run from 7PM to 3AM and have anywhere from 10 to 50 boats fighting to catch the biggest catfish or highest total weight of their 3 best fish. Usually the fishing is for Channel cats, they’re the most prevalent species in the river.
Saturday we did a tournament for Flathead catfish, we didn’t catch one Flathead, but there was a side pot for the largest Channel cat. For the first time in 4 tournaments our boat came out ahead in the money winning with a 5.8 pounder, not a huge fish but big enough on Saturday. It’s usually around $70 a boat and we won the $130 pot for the biggest Channel. I don’t really care if we win, it’s a lot of fun getting out on the water.
