The names with bids on Godaddy has doubled pre-auction since they raised the closeout prices to their current levels. There’s no point in sniping a name as soon as it goes to closeouts with you have to pay 4 times the minimum bid price.
I don’t like the new closeout prices, but it was a genius business move by Godaddy. I’ve always thought the key to a successful domain auction is getting the first bid as early as possible. I’m not talking about the obvious names with value but the ones that could go either way.
I’ve pitched this idea in the past to different auction platforms without success. I think the first bidder should get a discount on the final price if they win the auction. This would incentivize early bidding, maybe the first 2 bidders would be better. First bidder gets 20% off if they win, second bidder gets 10% off if they win, maybe to a max $ amount.
These things are determined by traction and exposure. Existing bids are by far the best form of exposure. The other benefit is there’s no point in sniping. For every auction I’ve won without competition, by waiting till the last minute, I’ve missed 10 others because I either forgot about the auction or was doing something else when I needed to be sniping.

What is the exact timing / rules on it?
Greetings Josh! I typically make a note of the name in my diary for the day of the auction, then on the final day I add the alarms to my phone for each name so I’m alerted 10 mins before official auction close. I’m placing a few proxy bids in if I can’t be bothered and the name already has bids. But I try not to get distracted/look away/browse to another website etc. during the final minutes, as when I’m sniping like for a preorder without other bids I’ve simply forgotten to go back to it, then hours later see the tab open and I just need to slam my fists on the desk. That was the main reason why I keep a diary (in a nice leather case) but I use it for daily things which ensures I look at it often, and also a slim but tall whiteboard for those to-do / name hit lists. It just works having these things in plain sight of my workspace instead of recording them on the computer/phone.
I know you track a bunch more names than I, but the diary and setting the phones’ alarm could be the perfect thing for others who kick themselves every now and then for forgetting things.
