Part of my job with Buckley Media is Business Development and biz dev takes a long time. A long time to establish relationships that get to the point that you are their go-to when it comes to service. My contact cards are deep and I have great relationships with thousands of people but I was not known for someone who could help them acquire or sell a domain. It was more about getting my opinion or introducing them to someone who could help them with a problem. Now I want to be the person that can help them when it comes to domains.

There is no playbook, no training, no school to do this. It’s something I have to keep on. Keep having meetings. Have some success so that I can show them what I can do. I am all words at this point other than my past experiences in other areas where I have had success. I am patient and like any business, you get paid when you get paid so you either figure it out or starve. At the nursery, I didn’t get a paycheck. Who was I going to get it from? Myself? No, I got an advance but it came from what we made. That is the same in the domain business. You get paid when you sell or provide a service that produces income.

With the “I have to earn it speech” above you would think it all comes down to me. Not at all. I learned many years ago when I had kids and 45 employees it’s not about me. It was never about me. I could stand up and tell everyone how I struggled and sacrificed and built this or that but the truth is the average person only cares if the actions or words involve them. They care about today and how it impacts them. Do you want to have nice things? Make sure others get nice things and you’ll be fine. When you give a talk about yourself my word of advice is to make part of it about them if you want their attention. What did you do or can you do to benefit them? That doesn’t mean you can’t share your story. It merely means you better have some words of wisdom or advice that allow them to get better too.

This isn’t being negative, this is being honest. Try it next time. When you talk to someone, make it about them. Listen. Make them feel good. Guarantee everything goes better. And you lost nothing. Probably gained a lot. That was my epiphany towards the end of this year. If I want to build up my business, my life, I need to build up everyone else and I will rise alongside them. That’s what biz dev is. You help build their business using your business and everyone will benefit. That’s what I plan to do. We’ll check in next year and see what inroads I made.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details. All names were chosen by us, Shane, Travis, and/or Josh . Everything we say is based on our research or is opinion. Do your due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, registrars, and individuals that are auctioning names. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good.
