The Continental Divide Trail runs over 3000 miles from Mexico to Canada. It has almost 500,000 feet of elevation gain and loss and the average altitude is over 10,000 feet. Tens of thousands do parts of it and about 75 finish it every year. It’s one of the hardest and most beautiful trails in the world. My favorite thing to do this summer is sit in the very small town of Twin Lakes Colorado and talk to the hikers passing through. Twin Lakes is one of the most popular restock places on the trail because its literally on the trail. The “town” consists of about 5 buildings but is a hopping place because it sits on the beautiful Twin Lakes and it gets a combination of hikers and tourists.
It’s pretty obvious who the hikers are. They have large bags and always a sleeping mat on the outside. They also are a little more tan, more in shape, and dirtier than the tourist. Some are there to get away and be alone but others have been alone so long they love to sit down and talk. I will grab a cup of coffee or some food and sit down and 99% of the time someone will come up and ask to sit down next to me. Even though there are plenty of open seats. The stories are great. They all have a given trail name and I’ve met Yakman, Heavy Harry, and SugarBear plus many more. All seem like nice people that are just seeing the country and trying something challenging. Educated but not wanting. Could have everything but don’t have many wants. I can see why my friend and AD of DSAD, Aaron, loves it so much. They are just like him and he fits in well. I also see the draw. Would love to spend 3 months just hiking. Would have to have my wife and dog along and I don’t see the wife part coming for a while. 😀
